                          Random Thoughts

                                                                           Little Ditty
Out of control my feelings rage
as words are read I turn each page–
Not sure how the thing will end
upon your whim my words will bend.

I, the letter-pusher, with fingers hardened
by years of key-poking, pray please pardon–
any attempt to turn the words around
they serve purpose of rhythm and sound.

I am the poet––you are the muse
to create utter nonsense I do refuse!
I sit tall, judging of every word
oh, letting imagination run wild is absurd!

After two mere minutes out popped this ballad
in the time it takes to make a pretty good salad–
If you like this little ditty of mine
Come on back...see what I write next time...

Thoughts on F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'

Last night I watched a redo of the movie The Great Gatsby.
It is a work of fiction by a man who was hellbent on being a published writer.
This man, Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896-1940), started writing as a young man.
He was an American novelist, essayist, and short story writer.

You would think the war that he was drafted into, World War I, would ruin his mind.
Yet he continued to write during his service days.
He emerged from the war and continued his passion of writing.

His greatest work, in my opinion, was The Great Gatsby.
It heralded the flamboyance and access of the jazz age.
He and his wife, Zelda,
lived a fast life
consisting of parting, drinking, dancing, and
'rubbing elbows' with the elite of their time.

Their flamboyant and 'over the top' personalities
shot them high into the company
of other great creators of prose and music.
Many say Fitzgerald used is lifestyle and his wife's diary as muses for his writing.

I find that my writing style aligns with F. Scott's style of using local settings.
That one can write what they know, albeit in a more exotic and exciting setting.

I used to look up to contemporary writer Danielle Steele
as the writer-mogul I wished to emulate.
That classy lady achieved world-wide fame as a best selling author.

However, I have come to accept that God has other plans for me and my writing.

Local fame.

That is enough for me!

Wiggled Wire, Pushed Buttons

I let the child of ten use my computer to work on a school poster.
George Washington in bold letters - 1st president of the USA.
Found and printed out a recipe for Hoe cakes,
as she knew for a fact that Hoe cakes were the dude's favorite breakfast.

Like a child, she used hot glue to attach the printed out information on her poster board.
I would have used regular tape...it's easier and quicker...but it was her project.
Let her do it her way!

She left me finishing up with the hot glue in the other room
and she came in to write and print something else.
She was in there quite a while...
Then the words no one wants to hear..."Auntie, I think something's wrong."

The computer screen wouldn't come on,
The keyboard wasn't making the little apple icon appear--
OMG! what is wrong?

Turn off the computer and turn it back on,
yet still the unit was being stubborn.
I wouldn't normally stress over such a predicament,
but my 60,000 word novel is on this computer---Ahhh!

Took a break, then came back in with fresh temper.
Wiggled wires, pushed buttons
and it came on!
Hallelujah!

If I make a funny face would you laugh?

If I acted like a birthday clown who makes balloon animals would you giggle?

If I jumped ten cars in a row like Evil Knievel and landed safely would you cheer?

If I sauntered around like Lady Godiva in my birthday suit would you blush and snicker?

If I did one act of kindness that was completely unexpected would you smile?

If yes, we should all step out of our bubble daily to act in kindness…so they can smile!

Time may change…but Owl Always Love You!

Change––it sneaks in when we’re engrossed in other occupations.

Sneaks like a child plucking the last cookie from Grandma’s antique cookie jar!

Grandma, she’s a peach! Got her wrapped around my pinky finger.

Pinky promises made with my childhood best friend that have lingered fifty years now.

Is a childhood best friend the same as when you were both innocent spectators in life?

Or has the bloom of innocence flitted away…like dead dandelion heads on a mid-summer’s breeze?

Oh, the spring and summer seasons of life are behind us now.

In their wake, autumn blazes in all its glory!

Glory, glory, hallelujah…they taught us that anthem when we were young and in school.

An anthem, much like Owl Always Love You…

FYI––pinky promises live forever…they are always cherished, and forever true…

                            Writing Journal

January 13, 2025

I've been writing for over forty years. Since 1993, I've written eight romance novels for practice. When Hallmark had a call for un-agented manuscripts in 2019, I decided to enter. Landing a book deal with Hallmark was a long-shot, but I went for it! Though Hallmark chose a different book, I took the plunge and, along with my childhood friend/editor, Heather (Thurber) Murata, self-published my first novel on Amazon. I'm so glad I did!

BIG Dreams Inn a Small New Hampshire Town has been read and enjoyed by many. I appreciate the positive comments/reviews on Amazon, made about Cassie and TJ's journey to love. Set in Northwood and Portsmouth, NH, Cassie and TJ and their family and friends live turbulent lives that set the characters in motion during a snowy winter and the festive holidays.

In 2022, I published my second sweet romance novel, book two in the series. BIG Dreams Explode! Cassie and TJ's story continues as they realize an outlandish dream and make that dream come true.
The lives of their close-knit families and friends intertwine and embolden the story. Of course there is a happy ending...that's what readers expect...but there are lots of twists in turns in the journey.

I wanted to create a book for my great-nieces and other children. So along with my long-time children's author and illustrator friend, Sandra Dodge, I wrote animal haikus and she drew line drawings. When we were done, I published the Animal Haiku A ~ Z Coloring Book. My great-nieces love it and highly recommend it to all.

I took a little sabbatical from writing last fall, but with the new year comes new vigor and insights on how to proceed with my stories.

BIG Dreams––Wounded Warrior's SHOT at Love: Last summer I wrote several chapters of the third book in the series. I had a nagging feeling that I needed to back up and set-up the story in a more vivid and emotional way. So last week I did just that. I wrote a Prelude that interjects the reader right in the middle of our hero's current situation. Nick is a solider serving overseas in a war in Afghanistan. FYI - the story takes place twenty-five years in the future. Now I can proceed...

What Went on at My House: A story of a young family's struggle told from a twelve-year-old's point of view. I'm excited about the beginning of the story and I know how I want to the story to end. So now I just have to brainstorm plot and that is one of my favorite activities. This story is set in my hometown of Nottingham, NH.

Love's Twists and Turns: What began as dream I had overnight, turned into a 1790's story that takes place in England. Two chapters in, I realized I would need to do a lot of research to have the story reflect life in the 1790's...I decided to just use my dream to be the backstory of the main character's great-grandmother. So I started over and have one great chapter written. I know where I want this story to go, now just need to flesh out my characters and steer them in the direction of the intended ending. However, I know too well that sometimes characters take over the story and I have to follow their lead. Either way, this story will span several years and have a diverse cast of characters.

Working on these three novels will keep me busy...

April 10, 2025

BIG Dreams--Wounded Warrior's SHOT at Love: Three months later and the first draft is down, except for the final chapter. I want to go back and edit from the beginning and change a few minor things. Then when I've got all the loose ends tied up, I can relax and experience the beauty of the wedding and some intimacy afterward. I'm going to have Nick sing a sexy song to Lacy as they embrace near the wedding night bedside in their new house. Nick has crossed the bridge on his road to healing from his PTSD. And Lacy reaches the place where she lays her innocence aside as she has become the strong, sensual woman that a hero like Nick Springsteen needs and deserves. Heather says she can probably have the project edited and published before Christmas, which is my goal.

BIG Dreams––Wounded Warrior’s SHOT at Love: Yay! Not only have I finished the first draft of the novel (except I’m holding off the final chapter until I edit the complete) I have edited 22 chapters. Heather says she will copy edit beginning next week. This is great news.

I’m adding in some details that will firm up the storyline and some important dialogue additions. Lacy is making greater personal growth in the story to align with the plot and get her up to speed with Nick’s maturity.

Will contact Spencer to see if he’s willing to create the book cover. I’m thinking green/black camouflage with a flag in the background and soldier and woman in the foreground.

I will definitely be participating in some upcoming vendor fairs when book three comes out! Having the complete set will be amazing! I wish everyone would share my joy! (In a perfect world…)

My Love Journey

I realized I loved creative writing when I was in high school. I joined the US Air Force right out of high school and during my 5 years in the service of my country, I expressed my feelings by writing 200 poems.

I had one false attempt at lifelong love, but it wasn't to be.

In this photo, on this fantastical day in 1993, is where my sweet love story began.
After years of craving true love, God finally gifted it to me in this wonderful, soft-spoken man.
